How to ask questions in German ?

There are two different types of questions.The first starts with a question word.The second starts with a finite verb and requires “yes” or “no” as an answer.Both types of questions are frequently in use.

wer? :  who?
was? : what?
wo? : where?
woher? : where . . . from?
wohin? where . . . (to)?
wann? : when?
wie? : how? ,what?
wie lange? : how long?
wie viel? : how much?
wie viele? :  how many?
wie oft? : how often?
warum? :  why?

Examples: Wo wohnst du? : Where do you live?
Woher kommen Sie? : Where do you come from?
Wie ist deine E-Mail-Adresse? :  What is your e-mail address?
Wie oft gehst du aus?: How often do you go out?
Warum bist du traurig? : Why are you sad?
Wieviel Geld hast du in deiner Tasche?: How much money do you have in your bag?

Yes and No questions

The second type of question can by answered by a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’. It does not need a question word. Here finite verb moves into the first position.

Examples:Kommst du aus Berlin? : Do you come from Berlin?
Sind Sie traurig?   : Are you sad?
Spielt er Fußball? : Does he play football?
Läuft sie wirklich jeden Tag 10 km? : Does she really run 10 km each day?
